Imagine stepping off a sleek water taxi onto the golden sands of the Venice Lido, where the Hotel Excelsior rises like a dreamy, pastel-hued palace straight out of a fairy tale. This isn't just any hotel—it's a living piece of glamour that has whispered secrets of old-world luxury since 1908.

The story begins with visionary Venetian entrepreneur Nicolò Spada, who dreamed of transforming the sleepy Lido sandbar into an international playground for the elite. Teaming up with architect Giovanni Sardi (the same talent behind the elegant Bauer on the Grand Canal), they created something audacious: a jubilant masterpiece of Belle Époque exuberance infused with exotic Moorish flair. Built in a whirlwind 18 months, the hotel opened with a lavish bash on July 21, 1908—fireworks over the lagoon, music filling the air, and over 3,000 glamorous guests mingling with 30,000 curious Venetians. It was an instant sensation, a bold departure from the more restrained Hotel des Bains nearby, bursting with cupolas, terraces, battlements, and that irresistible sense of playful grandeur.
Over the decades, the Excelsior became synonymous with effortless sophistication. Royalty, Hollywood stars, and literary legends—from Winston Churchill and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to Marlene Dietrich, Ingrid Bergman, and even a cheeky Jeff Goldblum—have all called it home. And let's not forget its starring role in cinema: since hosting the very first Venice Film Festival in 1932 on its balconies, it's been the go-to haven for stars during the festival, adding layers of red-carpet magic to its already enchanting aura.
If you're dreaming of a Venetian escape that blends beachside serenity with cinematic sparkle, this iconic spot deserves a place on your wishlist.
A Romantic Painting from the 1920's
The **Hotel Excelsior** welcomed me like an old friend this past summer—and quickly became one of my absolute favorite hotels ever. There's something utterly magical about being just 15 minutes from the heart of Venice, yet wrapped in the serene luxury of this stunning beachfront palace. It's the perfect escape: close enough for daily adventures in the city, far enough to leave the crowds behind and return to pure bliss.

What drew me in immediately was the unique Moorish architecture—those dreamy pastel-colored suites with elegant arches, ornate details, and a timeless exotic flair that feels like stepping into a bygone era of glamour. The rooms are incredibly spacious (mine had a glorious balcony overlooking the sea), and every corner whispers sophistication with vibrant colors and thoughtful Venetian touches.
Here’s a perfect moment to pause and admire: A luxurious interior view of one of the pastel-hued junior suites, showcasing Moorish arches, soft seafoam and pink tones, elegant furnishings, and a balcony with sea views.
The pool area? Pure heaven. That heated outdoor pool surrounded by lush palms and loungers became my daily sanctuary—lazy mornings by the water, a dip to cool off, then back to the beach with its private cabanas and gentle waves.
After a morning of relaxation, we'd hop on the complimentary shuttle boat (it runs regularly to San Marco) and dive into Venice: wandering narrow calles, popping into shops for beautiful leather goods or Murano glass, sipping espresso at a hidden café, or indulging in the creamiest gelato.

And the Italian breakfasts—oh, darling, they were a highlight every single day. Think endless fresh pastries (cornetti still warm from the oven), perfectly ripe fruit, creamy yogurts, cheeses, prosciutto, eggs made to order, and of course, strong cappuccino to start the day right. It felt like the most indulgent way to fuel up before heading out.

Our routine was perfection: explore Venice by day, perhaps stopping at the legendary Harry's Bar for those famous bellinis (a must—cheers to Hemingway!), then escape the tourist bustle on the last boat back to our elegant haven. The hotel felt like a luxurious cocoon—peaceful sunsets, cocktails at the Blue Bar, and that sense of having the best of both worlds.
One of my favorite cocktails, I had the first one in Milano many years ago served with big bowls of local olives and amazing little crackers. I really enjoyed the ones in Venice too
If you're craving a Venetian getaway that balances culture, shopping, and seaside serenity with five-star refinement, the Excelsior is unforgettable. I can't wait to return—It truly is one of those places that lingers in your heart.
